ABOUT

With urban community gardening as a tool for youth work in neglected multicultural suburban areas, the project Urban Remedy is a direct, local and holistic answer to climate change and such social & economical problems of youth in neglected urban neighbourhoods as: low quality of public spaces, low engagement in communal activities, conflicts between migrants and locals, and limited offers & access in the fields of informal & non-formal education and employment issues.

The project aim is to grow capacity in the field of youth work through community gardening as a youth work tool in disregarded suburban areas to raise awareness towards the global issues of climate change and its associated causes and problems amongst young people in the local level. The project will equip youth with valuable knowledge and experience in urban gardening, re-greening, sustainability and food production; as well as to tackle the lack of capacity  in the field of youth work through developing urban gardening as a youth work tool.

All these tools and concepts are not an every day theme within the youth, but are essential in creating an ability for increasing resilience through facilitating empowerment and shared learning. Gardening can be and should be used as a tool for social inclusion, especially in areas with high poverty risks and amongst young people with fewer opportunities. Therefore this project will enable the youth participants to inspire their peers and share their newly found passion for green urban spaces in a sustainable community managed way that enables change and overcoming intercultural and other differences.

OBJECTIVES  of the Urban Remedy project are:

To equip youth with necessary tools for working in neglected suburban areas;

To empower youth workers and youth in the field of community building and help them acquire necessary competences to work not only with their immediate peers, but also youth with fewer opportunities and with migration background and to promote integration;

To work together in developing the concept of community gardening as a tool for youth work;

To develop job related skills in youth, such as, realizing projects, fundraising, working with volunteers and target groups;

To observe possibilities of implementation of the learning work outcomes from partner organizations, to collect and process feedback;

To reflect on the concept and share practical tools and techniques for urban gardening as a youth work tool for social inclusion;

To promote gardening as a community building tool through various means, such as social media, networking events and public events;

To extract and disseminate the knowledge gathered and created on project topics;

To ignite public discussion on the topic and involve local municipalities.

A1 MOBILITY OF YOUTH WORKERS : PROGRAM

02/11/2019 - 09/11/2019 in Berlin & Brandenburg, Germany

The 6 days (+ 2 travel days) long youth worker mobility will take place in Berlin, Germany, partly in the neighbourhoods of Neukölln and Kreuzberg, that are well famous for its multiculturality, community gardens and controversial development issues:

02/11 - Day 0 - arrivall, till 18:00, settling in accomodation, community dinner;

03/11 - Day 1 - Ice breaking games, getting to know each other, the project framework, defining learning aims;

04/11 - Day 2 - Youth work day - develop ideas about the target groups, define the problems, opportunities, look at examples of urban gardening as a youth work tool;

05/11 - Day 3 - Urban day - input on participation, interaction and reclaiming public spaces, field visit of an intercultural urban gardening project;

06/11- Day 4 - Personal time, developing an idea of a holistic approach, based on permaculture example;

07/11 - Day 5 - Communication and community day - input, experience and tools of communication, conflict management, understanding of cultural differences;

08/11 - Day 6 - Closing the experience through reflection on learning outcomes, planning follow-up and evaluation of the training course;

09/11 - Day 01 - Breakfast, Departure.

We will use methods of non-formal education, combining participant contributions, facilitated simulation games, group reflections, expert input and field visits. The logistics and planning will be coordinated by the applicant organisation - Kulturlabor Trial & Error e.V. The group will be led by experienced facilitators with competence in intercultural communication, youth work, community building and environmental activism.
